COVID-19 and Airway Management of the Laryngectomy and Tracheostomy Patient
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been significant shifts in recommendations for managing patients breathing through a tracheostoma. These recommendations include limiting or eliminating any aerosol generating procedure (AGP) with the goal to protect both patients and health care providers during this crisis. AGPs include any procedure which elicits a cough or causes droplets or aerosolized particles to spread. This has major implications for patients breathing through a tracheostoma as well as the HCPs who care for them. These recommendations impact direct care of patients with a total laryngectomy or tracheostomy.
