The surgical techniques employed during a total laryngectomy can have a significant impact on the patient’s ability to produce tracheoesophageal voice and use HMEs and handsfree speaking valves. Timing of the tracheoesophageal puncture and prosthesis fitting, cricopharyngeal myotomy and configuration of the tracheostoma impact the timing and ability to communicate and speak handsfree, ultimately affecting quality of life.
