Provox XtraHME launched

Atos Medical is proud to announce the launch of

Provox XtraMoist HME and Provox XtraFlow HME

The Provox HME:s (heat- and moisture exchangers) act as an artificial nose and regains some of the lost respiratory functions of the nose for persons breathing through a tracheostoma. The Provox XtraHME heats and moisturizes inhaled air, since the specially treated foam inside the HME cassette traps heat and moisture during exhalation.

The Provox XtraHME is available in two versions:

XtraMoist HME

has capacities close to normal nasal function. The humidification is improved and the XtraMoist is still keeping the good airflow for easy breathing. XtraMoist is recommended for patients who have recently undergone a total laryngectomy, and for accustomed users.

XtraFlow HME

is focusing on having superior airflow. XtraFlow is great to use when exercising and when adapting to the breathing resistance after having been without an HME for a longer time.

Atos Medical launches Provox^®Vega^™ with SmartInserter^™ – the next generation of voice prostheses

Ten years after the launch of the second generation of Provox, Atos Medical proudly presents the third generation of indwelling prostheses, the worldwide gold standard for voice restoration after a total laryngectomy. Well over 10,000 man hours have been invested in research and development. The result, Provox Vega, designed for a better voice, improved airflow and innovative insertion.

Provox Vega has been developed in close cooperation with leading institutions, doctors, researchers and speech language pathologists, as well as patients from all around the world. The features and advantages of the Provox system are based on thorough research and/or clinical studies. The Provox system of voice and pulmonary rehabilitation for laryngectomees is renowned for being based upon a vast amount of clinical studies.

Short on the history of the Provox System - Atos Medical developed its first Provox voice prosthesis in 1987. In 1998, Atos Medical raised the standard in modern voice restoration with Provox2. Almost 20 years after the premier, Atos Medical once again unveils the latest in voice prostheses for laryngectomees, Provox Vega (not yet available on all markets).

KURZ awarded for innovative middle ear implant

News in middle ear prostheses

On November 27, 2009 Heinz Kurz GmbH Medizintechnik received the Dr. Rudolf Eberle Innovation Award 2009 for the TTP VARIAC^® Middle Ear Prosthesis System. The system was chosen from a total of 81 entries vying for this award for its exemplary innovation and the magnitude of the social benefit it will provide. In honor and recognition of this achievement, the award was presented to Heinz Kurz GmbH Medizintechnik by Ernst Pfister, the Baden-Wuerttemberg State Minister of Economics. It is accompanied by a monetary prize totaling EUR 7.500.

About KURZ Medizintechnik
KURZ was the first company to introduce titanium prostheses to the otology market. In 1994 KURZ Medizintechnik launched their first versions of pure titanium grade 2 middle ear prostheses. The prostheses have been carefully developed in accordance with important criteria for a superior product. All features have been thoroughly evaluated in test models and experimental studies.

Provox XtraFlange is launched

New professional accessory in the Provox System

Atos Medical expands the Provox System and introduces Provox XtraFlange.
Provox XtraFlange is a silicone washer, intended to reduce periprosthetic leakage in patients using indwelling Provox voice prostheses.
Periprosthetic leakage (leakage around) is a known problem for users of any type of voice prosthesis. This type of leakage is detected in 11-13% of voice prosthesis replacements.

Provox XtraFlange might for example be indicated for periprosthetic leakage caused by:

downsizing prosthesis diameter,
gastroesophageal reflux,
fistula created by scalpel,
other tissue related conditions.

How it works
The thin (0.4 mm) silicone washer is mounted while the prosthesis is in situ. It stays in place until the voice prosthesis needs to be changed. After the prosthesis is replaced, a new washer can be mounted if neccessary.
The thin material of the washer adheres to the tracheal mucosa and prevents leakage by means of surface tension. The washer is not glued to the prosthesis, which allows the prosthesis and the washer to move independently.
Always confirm that the voice prosthesis, in combination with the XtraFlange, is adequately retained in the puncture.
