KURZ Stapedioplasty
When you suffer from otosclerosis the hearing bones in the middle ear (the ossicles) become stiff, preventing the sound transmission from the eardrum to reach the inner ear, leading to what is called conductive hearing loss. One way to treat this is to replace the defective stapes with a prosthesis.
Stapedial prostheses
The KURZ range of stapedial prostheses are all made of pure medical grade 2 titanium which provides very good sound conduction even at higher frequencies because of its small mass. All KURZ prostheses are tested to withstand MRI of 7 Tesla, at current the normal level is approximately 1.5 Tesla; this means that the KURZ prostheses are built for the standards and needs of tomorrow; which is a true demand for long-term implants.
The K-piston is a standard type of stapes prosthesis. It has a band loop and rounded edges which minimizes the risk of necrosis. The CliP® Piston àWengen and the Soft CliP® have a special clip-feature for fixation on the incus. Generally the fixation of a prosthesis is closely connected to the hearing gain obtained via the prosthesis, hence the better fixation the higher success rate of the surgery. These two prostheses also come with rounded edges.
MVP-Häusler design prosthesis
Sometimes it is necessary to fixate a prosthesis to the malleus instead of the incus; in such cases KURZ offers the MVP-Häusler design prosthesis. It comes with a ball joint to overcome the difficult angle that needs to be bridged in this surgery. This prosthesis also has the clip-feature for fixation, as described above.
